When I Grow Up, I Want to Speak French Just Like Her

Published: November 9, 2025 • 4 min read

I was scrolling through Instagram and then I stumbled across a video. It was a lady, speaking French, and I could not help but be delighted by how eloquently she spoke. You see, I love articulate people and often times, I myself struggle to articulate my thoughts perfectly. However, when I see people who speak confidently and are able to use words so beautifully to convey thoughts in their head, I'm always drawn to them.

I've been speaking English since my childhood and over my short lifetime, I've come across different people who are able to articulate their thoughts and ideas so beautifully, and I strive to be like those people. I believe writing helps me to practice better organizing my thoughts. It also helps to clarify my own thoughts as well, and I believe through more and more practice, I can get 1% better each day at becoming more articulate even when I speak. I know plenty of articulate English speakers that I aspire to be able to express myself like, but that is not what this blog post is about. This is about the first French speaker that inspired me to be more articulate in French speaking.

Meeting Tiana Mayembe (Through My Screen)

This is about the first French speaker who, when I heard her speak, I just knew instantly that I wanted to speak like her someday. Here is a link to her Instagram account.

You see, I can't remember specifically what video of hers I came across the first time, but I do remember how hearing her speak made me feel. It wasn't just the words from her mouth but the way she kept her head high, her posture, her balanced use of body language. I guess this is another nice thing about learning a new language, for me at least. You find new motivators from different cultures that you can one day aspire to have a quality that they already possess.

Creating the Space to Grow

Now I don't get the chance to practice speaking French as much as I'd really wish to. I literally have no one to practice with except when I speak to my Preply tutor. But I can't use that as an excuse. If I am ever going to be able to speak like that lady, I have to create the space and situations to push myself to practice speaking French despite my current environment.

That is one of the main reasons I'll be creating French videos for every single English video I put up on this website. I should've had one ready by now, particularly for the launch of Version 1.0 of the French Writing Playground. However, my Preply tutor has been on a break for a month and I won't be resuming classes until tomorrow. I'm going to read the script for my first video with him and have him correct my mispronunciations.

And little by little, with every video I create, I'll slowly become as eloquent and articulate as Tiana Mayembe.
